Founded in Elgin in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail has established an extraordinary reputation for its expertise in selecting, maturing and bottling some of Scotland's finest single malt whiskies. With more than a century of experience, the family-owned company has developed an exceptional portfolio of rare and mature expressions, many of which offer whisky enthusiasts an opportunity to explore individual distilleries through distinctive cask selections.

This particular 2003 vintage demonstrates the extraordinary influence of First Fill Sherry Butt maturation. Unlike refill casks, which typically provide a more restrained oak influence, first-fill sherry casks can contribute considerable richness, fruit concentration and aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Beautifully fragrant and inviting, opening with vibrant orange peel and a generous combination of gently stewed orchard fruits. Warm notes of cinnamon, cloves and traditional festive spices gradually emerge, creating an aromatic profile reminiscent of freshly baked fruitcake. The citrus character provides a refreshing contrast to the rich cooked fruits, while subtle notes of seasoned oak introduce additional depth and maturity.

Palate: Rich, full-bodied and beautifully structured, with an indulgent combination of sweet raspberry compote and warm, oven-baked apples. The fruit character is generous and expressive, developing alongside delicate anise and aromatic baking spices. The influence of the First Fill Sherry Butt provides concentration and depth, while the whisky's impressive natural cask strength delivers a powerful yet layered tasting experience. Gentle oak tannins and subtle spice gradually emerge, creating a sophisticated balance between ripe fruit sweetness and mature wood.

Finish: Long, warming and wonderfully persistent, with pronounced mature oak providing structure and depth. A distinctive note of freshly cracked black pepper develops alongside lingering cooked fruits and gentle sherry sweetness. The finish gradually becomes drier and more spice-driven, leaving an elegant combination of seasoned oak, aromatic warmth and delicate fruit.
