Malternative No.1 Le Gers Majeur 1976 French Armagnac

Malternative Belgium Le Gers Majeur 1976 Single Cask Armagnac is an exceptionally rare vintage French spirit distilled in 1976 at the historic Domaine de Pébérère in the Ténarèze region of Armagnac. Selected by Malternative Belgium after an extensive tasting at the estate, this remarkable cask stood apart for its extraordinary complexity, depth and distinctly rustic character. Drawn from Cask No. 115 and bottled at natural cask strength in 2025, only 120 bottles were produced, offering a compelling expression of traditional Armagnac shaped by almost five decades of maturation.

Malternative Belgium is an independent Belgian bottler specialising in exceptional Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and other mature spirits selected for their individuality and provenance. Le Gers Majeur marks the first release in the bottler’s Armagnac series and was discovered during a visit to Domaine de Pébérère in the Gers region. Owned by the Faget family since 1820, the historic estate encompasses approximately 55 hectares of vineyards in Ténarèze, where limestone-clay soils support traditional Ugni Blanc and Baco grape varieties. Distillation takes place at the château itself, while maturation in traditional barrels and naturally seasonal cellar conditions contributes to the distinctive complexity and character of its Armagnacs.

Tasting Notes:
Rich and deeply expressive, opening with stewed cherries and plums alongside aged balsamic, roasted walnuts and honeyed meadow flowers. Black olives, saffron, fresh pine, figs and orange peel add layers of savoury, earthy and aromatic complexity. The palate is powerful and authentically rustic, with dried plums bringing balance alongside artisanal quince marmalade and a distinctive touch of sirop de Liège. The finish is long, lively and pleasantly dry, carrying persistent cherry and dried apricot through fresh acidity before developing into tobacco, worn leather and bay leaf, leaving an elegant impression of mature fruit and rustic Armagnac character.
