Malternative No.46 Le Frimas Lot 97 GC French Cognac

Malternative No. 46 “Le Frimas” Lot 97 Grande Champagne French Cognac is an exceptional single cask release distilled in 1997 by a bouilleur de cru in Mainxe-Gondeville, at the heart of Cognac’s prestigious Grande Champagne Premier Cru. Produced exclusively from Colombard grapes—a variety now representing less than one percent of Cognac vineyard plantings—this distinctive eau-de-vie matured for nearly 27 years in oak before being bottled in May 2025. Presented at its natural cask strength of 53.9% ABV without reduction or additives, Le Frimas is a remarkably vibrant and aromatic expression combining mature complexity with exceptional freshness, tension and fruit intensity.

Malternative Belgium has established a strong reputation amongst spirits enthusiasts for sourcing distinctive, naturally presented Cognacs that showcase individual producers, vintages and terroirs. No. 46 “Le Frimas” is particularly unusual for its exclusive use of Colombard, a historic Charente grape variety prized for its acidity and expressive fruit character but now rarely encountered in modern Cognac production. Nearly three decades of maturation have developed remarkable concentration while retaining the freshness and energy of the original spirit, resulting in a limited release of just 257 bottles.

Tasting Notes:
An aromatic powerhouse, opening with an exuberant rush of ripe Williams pear, white peach and mirabelle plum layered with bright lemon peel, delicate jasmine and subtly toasted oak. The palate is powerful yet beautifully controlled, delivering juicy white fruits, crisp green apple and a touch of almond alongside vibrant acidity that keeps the Cognac tight, fresh and energetic. Herbal complexity reminiscent of Green Chartreuse emerges beneath the fruit, adding another dimension to its concentrated character. The finish is long and compelling, with returning orchard fruits, light gingerbread spice and a mineral, almost saline undertone that leaves the palate immediately calling for another sip.
