Penderyn Icons of Wales No. 14 “The Village” is a limited-edition Single Malt Welsh Whisky created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Portmeirion, one of Wales’ most distinctive architectural landmarks. Finished in Amarone wine casks and bottled at 46% ABV, this expression combines Penderyn’s elegant, fruit-driven house style with the richness and structure of Italian red wine maturation. Ripe plums, dark berries and floral honey are layered with vanilla, cocoa and warming oak spice, while the Amarone influence contributes additional depth and subtle grape tannins. Released in 2026 as the fourteenth expression in Penderyn’s celebrated Icons of Wales series, “The Village” is both a tribute to Welsh creativity and a beautifully expressive whisky in its own right.

Penderyn’s Icons of Wales series celebrates the people, places and cultural milestones that have shaped Welsh identity, with “The Village” paying tribute to the extraordinary Italianate village of Portmeirion on the North Wales coast. Created by visionary Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1973, Portmeirion combines Mediterranean-inspired architecture with the dramatic natural landscape of Wales. The village later gained international recognition as the filming location for the cult television series The Prisoner. Released to coincide with Portmeirion’s centenary celebrations in 2026, this whisky captures some of that Welsh-Italian connection through its Amarone cask finish. The rich Italian wine influence complements Penderyn’s naturally elegant spirit, bringing additional dark fruit, floral sweetness, spice and structure while retaining the freshness for which the distillery is known.

Tasting Notes:

The aroma opens with ripe plums and dark berries, intertwined with delicate vanilla and a subtle touch of cocoa. Light floral honey develops underneath, while toasted oak and gentle spice give the bouquet additional depth and structure. On the palate, velvety berries and ripe plums create a rich, full-bodied character, accompanied by floral honey sweetness and the distinctive fruit richness of the Amarone cask finish. A restrained layer of spice provides balance and keeps the whisky beautifully composed. The finish is long and expressive, with candied fruits and spicy toasted oak lingering across the palate. Subtle grape tannins provide a fine structure to the conclusion, leaving a sophisticated balance of fruit, sweetness and warming oak.
