Founded in 1988, Signatory Vintage has become one of Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers, recognised for selecting distinctive casks and presenting whisky with minimal intervention. Its Cask Strength Collection highlights individual casks bottled at their natural strength, preserving the full influence of both spirit and maturation. Balmenach, established in 1824 in the Speyside region, is known for producing a relatively robust, malty and weighty style of spirit compared with many of its more delicate neighbours. Much of its production is traditionally destined for blending, making well-aged independently bottled single casks particularly interesting. In this 2008 release, 17 years in a First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt gives Balmenach’s muscular spirit considerable richness, layering dark fruit, cocoa and roasted nut character over its naturally substantial malt foundation.

Tasting Notes:

The aroma opens with a generous wave of dark dried fruits, including raisins, dates and dried plums, followed by roasted walnuts, cocoa and a subtle touch of polished oak. Rich Oloroso sweetness is balanced by warming spice and a deeper malty character underneath. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, delivering raisins, dark cherries and dried figs alongside toasted nuts, dark chocolate and richly textured malt. Cinnamon, clove and seasoned oak gradually build through the middle, giving the whisky excellent structure and depth without overwhelming its fruit. The finish is long, warming and increasingly dry, with lingering cocoa, roasted nuts, dark fruit and firm oak spice leaving a powerful and satisfyingly mature sherry-driven impression.
