Established in 1823, Mortlach is celebrated for its unusually complex distillation process, often described as 2.81 times distillation, which produces an exceptionally rich, weighty and savoury spirit. The combination of Mortlach’s muscular character and a First Fill Pedro Ximénez sherry finish creates a particularly expressive whisky, balancing the distillery’s distinctive malty depth with the intense sweetness and dark-fruit richness of PX sherry.

Tasting Notes:

The aroma is wonderfully rich and expressive, opening with ripe plums, dark berries, figs and raisins. Layers of creamy caramel and dark cocoa develop alongside the intense sweetness of Pedro Ximénez sherry, while gentle oak spice provides additional depth. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, revealing honeyed sweetness and concentrated dried fruits accompanied by roasted nuts, dark chocolate and warming cinnamon. Mortlach’s naturally robust malt character provides structure beneath the generous sherry influence, creating an impressive balance between fruit, sweetness and spice. The finish is long and warming, with lingering caramel, dark cocoa and rich sherry sweetness gradually giving way to seasoned oak, gentle spice and a refined, increasingly dry conclusion.
